Services

Northumberland Wildflowers offers a range of services. Please click on the links below to find the service most suited to your needs.

Wildlife Gardening
If you are wishing to increase the amount of wildlife using your garden by providing more shelter, food and breeding habitat, but are unsure of where to start, we can help. Our advisor would look carefully at your objectives and develop a suite of projects that can be implemented one by one (or all together) to encourage wildlife into your garden.

You may have tried to encourage wildlife into your garden already but feel that it isn’t working quite how you envisaged, or you would like to develop the scheme further. Your garden may just need a bit of tweaking to improve it in one direction or another for the species that you would like to see in it.

A visit from us would range from one hour upwards, the time to be spent and the level of written report to be agreed before the visit takes place. Please note that this is not a garden design service. Fee: £30 per hour.

Ecological Consultancy
We have experience in the full range of ecological consultancy services including surveys, reports, management plans, environmental impact assessment and liaising with outside agencies such as English Nature and the Environment Agency.

If you are interested in our ecological consultancy service, please email or ring us for further details and a quote.

Farm survey and ecological management planning
Farm surveys are required in some detail for applications to agri-environment schemes. Our advisor has experience in surveying farmland habitats and preparing management plans. We also have experience in liaising with the various agencies involved in such schemes and can help with your application forms. Our advisory fee will usually be included in your application for funding.

Please note that this is not an agency service. Fee: £35 per hour.

Wildlife management plans
Even small projects can need a management plan, so this service offers a range of management plans which vary in the level of detail covered and can be tailored to suit your budget. The following are offered, or you may specify your own plan:
  • Annotated Plan
A plan with simple key accompanied by job sheets explaining what needs to be done when and how.
  • Basic Management Plan
Includes: a broad habitat survey of the site. Management plan with target habitat and species explained, plant species mixes and basic management outlined.
  • Intermediate Management Plan
Survey of protected species. Basic background information (soils, climate etc), management plan with target habitat and species explained, plant species mixes given and basic management outlined. Summary of management tasks. Plan with a key.
  • Full Management Plan
Habitat survey with some detailed plant community survey. Protected species survey. Basic background information (soils, climate etc), management plan with target habitat and species explained, plant species mixes given and basic management outlined. Summary of management tasks. Plan with a key. Job sheets explaining what needs to be done when and how.

Fee: The management plan is a flexible tool which will be designed to suit your needs. Site complexity and requirements will determine the total fee, but for planning purposes about £35 per hour should be budgeted for.

Contract growing
Northumberland Wildflowers’ key service is the production of local origin wild flower seed and plant stock. There are various reasons behind the choice of using seed or plants, and often projects will use a combination. The use of large plants in a large scale project is not economical or practical on a large scale, so you may wish to consider using our plug plants.

Plug plants can be a useful way of kick starting the wildflower element of a habitat creation project. They are normally used to plant up a relatively small area within the larger habitat area. Once established they then self-seed into the remaining unplanted area. Using this method can result in a longer term project, but the result may be a more naturally developed sward. Plug plants are only grown to order and can take up to 9 months to deliver. It is therefore necessary to order them well in advance of when you wish to plant them. Plugs are produced in 15ml or 40ml cells, according to your specification. There are 180 15ml cells per tray and 40 40ml cells per tray. Each tray of plants costs between £15 and £20, depending on species. A wide range of species can be grown in this way. If you are interested in this service, please contact Judith Baker either by email or by telephone.
